Is The Kia EV9 Your New Family Car?

When we think of EVs (electric vehicles), we tend to think of either sleek solo cars or tiny city runarounds. Either way, neither option is ideal for a big family. Family cars need to have room for everyone inside, with enough seating and legroom for everyone to make it through short and long journeys comfortably.

There also needs to be enough trunk space for everyone’s luggage, the weekly grocery runs, pets, you name it – and, naturally, family cars also need to be pretty reliable.

The last thing you want is to be stuck on the side of the road every other week with screaming kids and restless dogs. You need to rest assured that your passengers are as safe as possible – should, of course, the worst case scenario come to pass.

Until recently, we haven’t really come across an EV that ticks all of those boxes, but could the 2024 Kia EV9 be the answer to our prayers?

Some experts find Kia’s EV9 to be an eye-opener. It has three rows of seats and comfortably seats seven people, making it perfect for big families on the go.

The EV also reportedly has 20.2 cubic feet of cargo space behind the third row of seats – and with an alleged 279 horsepower and over 500 lb-ft torque, it doesn’t seem to be lagging in the power stakes, either. Again – pretty impressive for an EV, if we’re to take Kia and critics’ words for it.

According to Kia, it has a range of 304 miles, and with 350kW DC fast charging, it can go from 10% to 80% in about 24 minutes. Any parent will know how fast charging is essential when you’re low on time, which is almost daily!

And, for those of you who are a little less impressed with the speed and power of the EV9, you’ll be happy to hear that the Kia’s got more tricks up its sleeves for the year or so ahead. For example, the Kia EV9 GT will be an interesting option for Kia fans next year.

It’s supposed to hit showrooms in January 2025 and supposedly will have the potential to achieve 0 to 62 mph in under four seconds – again, we’ll just have to take the manufacturer’s word for it, at least for now!

For now, is its predecessor – the EV9 – worth it?

Currently, the EV9 Land model can be bought for about $73,000 inside the US. A little on the expensive side, yes – but as family cars go, the Kia EV9 does seem to tick all of the right boxes, at least according to motoring experts.

So, if you’re looking to move your family over to EVs and want one that will not just accompany your gas car but could replace it outright, the Kia EV9 may be the way to go. As always, get yourself a test drive before you part with any capital!
